Shape Your Career at Mass General Hospital

For many minorities, discrimination can be a large barrier when it comes to finding a job. While the United States has taken many measures to enforce diversity in the workforce, discrimination still exists. It is unfortunate that many members of diverse backgrounds must work harder to navigate these obstacles.  Diverse programs and career focused classes serve as a building block for minorities looking to start a career in the health or medical professions.

As a Massachusetts resident, I have had my fair share of struggles in applying for jobs and securing a stable career. I was never directly hindered from following my dreams, but I know that being a minority has contributed to this challenge. I have been overlooked and traded for non-minority candidates who were equally or less qualified.  During my senior year, I came across a fellowship program offered by the Mass General Hospital called the Hausman Workforce Diversity Program. As I reviewed the requirements I realized that this program would be a great fit for me. I eagerly awaited the results of my application. The hospital is a well known institution in MA because of its quality treatment, diverse and efficient staff. I was so excited when I received my acceptance letter to be a fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the Hausman Fellowship Program.

Participating in the fellowship program transformed my view of the world. I became more responsible; family oriented, and gained a new respect for my background and where I come from. I gained self-confidence and feel more prepared to approach life goals with a positive mindset. Aside from the guidance that I received from the doctors and mentors there, I underwent extensive healthcare, medical, and theoretical training. My experience has been invaluable and uplifting.

As a minority it is important to know that you too can accomplish anything. The Hausman Fellowship Program at the Mass General Hospital inspired me to pursue a promising career with confidence regardless of the obstacles that I may face.  You can contact the Hausman Fellowship Program at Mass General Hospital for more information or for how to apply to this all encompassing fellowship program.

Take Advantage of Youth Scholarship Programs

As a life coach and mentor, I have met many students from various backgrounds coping with various problems in their lives. Many of whom are anxious about being open with their dreams, out of fear for what others might think of them. Underneath these fears, I have seen great potential among many of my mentees. I believe that a bit of support from friends, family and peers can prove to be beneficial for these individuals’ self-esteem and career development. There should be effective programs designed to help these individuals pursue a career in their specific interest field.

There are several programs designed to encourage younger people to consider a career in the medical profession. One such program is the Hausman Youth Scholarship Program. The program offers training for students to pursue a career in the field of healthcare and medicine, and offers financial means for them to do so. For many students who aspire to one day become a prominent figure in the healthcare industry, this program can help set them up for success in the long run. Students are exposed to the real-life work scenario through both conceptual and practical classes. This program promotes a sense of respect and unity among healthcare workers, both of which are vital when trying to pursue a career in the medical field.

Another major feature of the Hausman Youth Scholarship Program is that it promotes diversity and respect of one another’s cultural identity, something very important when working in a diverse work environment like a hospital. The program also assigns mentors that to each student to figure out their goals and excel in their paths. A scholarship program like this one would also give students an immediate leg up when applying to college, as they are under consideration for admission. The programs have been designed to help the minority students get a fair chance of improving their career options.

As a parent myself, I would advise other parents to invest in a local Youth Scholarship Program so that their child can be inspired to pursue his or her dream, and get a chance to learn the prospects of health and medical care. If you feel your child might be interested in a medical career, I would advise you allow them to learn more about what it would be like to work in such an environment. Search for the programs in your area, and choose the one that will be accommodating for you and your child. These programs help in the all-around development of your child, thus helping them grow into a confident person and be prepared for a professional career in a tough but promising medical environment.
